Miku buns are basic Chinese Steam Buns. These steam buns are brought to the temple for prayers during the Nine Emperor Gods Festival (“Gao Ong Yah” 九皇大帝/九王爷 ).
This festival is mainly celebrated in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. This year, the Nine Emperor Gods Festival is celebrated from 17 Oct 2020 to 25 October 2020. During this period, devotees will go to the temple to pray. After prayers, these buns can be left at the temple or brought back for snack or breakfast. I usually go to Tow Boo Keong temple in Ipoh. These steam buns are sold outside the temple and the queue can be quite long. So making them is much easier. This recipe is also very quick, simple and easy.
Last year, I made some of Miku buns in the shape of tortoise! see link https://youtu.be/M5tzMam5Owg
For this recipe, in order to get a firm shape and smooth dough skin, the steam buns are more firm than my other chinese steam bun recipes but still soft and fluffy 😊😁😋
